Enhancing school wellbeing through better conflict management
The Australian Principal Health and Wellbeing Survey continues to investigate the factors impacting upon the wellbeing of school leaders across Australia. One of the factors that has been identified through this research has been the concerning impact of school-based conflict. Differences of opinion with parents sometimes escalate to create conflicts that impact significantly on the health and wellbeing of school leaders and other school staff. In this presentation, Peter will speak to the department’s systems developed to support school leaders to navigate conflict as effectively as possible. Peter will be joined by experienced Principal and School Supervisor Brett Shackleton who will speak of his own experience of school mediation and the positive results achieved for himself, his staff, parents and student through mediation. Session 2 Overwhelm to Empowerment: Practical Strategies for Educators
In this engaging workshop, we’ll dive into the three main reasons teachers often experience overwhelm and explore effective strategies to transform overwhelm into empowerment: 1. Uncertainty: Many teachers struggle with unclear goals and lack of direction, forgetting their WHY. I’ll introduce the 3 Most Important Questions (3MIQs) framework, a tool that helps educators clarify their end goals and focus on what truly matters. 2. Too Many Options: When educators are faced with endless to-do lists, it becomes difficult to prioritise. We’ll work through simple systems and frameworks that allow teachers to brain dump everything on their plate, then systematically decipher what’s urgent and important. 3. Lack of Information: Overwhelm often stems from not knowing where to start or how to move forward. In this session, I’ll discuss the power of self-education and habit stacking. I’ll provide frameworks that will help teachers create a manageable 6-month plan for continuous improvement towards a goal or result, reducing the anxiety caused by information gaps. By the end of this workshop, teachers will walk away with clear, practical strategies to manage overwhelm and increase their professional and personal effectiveness. All handouts will be provided.

11:10 AM - 11:40 AM Students as partners in the curriculum: leveraging student voice to create inclusive classrooms
Offering student choice and voice is an increasing approach to inclusivity in education (Morris et al., 2019; Tai et al., 2021; Nieminen, 2021; Nieminen & Tuohilampi, 2017). Student voice in teaching and assessment facilitates belonging and increases motivation (Dickson, 2018). This is because students actively participate in co-producing their education, where they can make decisions about how they engage with and demonstrate their knowledge. In this presentation, I will share research conducted in a Secondary school in Queensland that explores student voice and choice in the curriculum. The rationale for this session is to share anecdotal evidence and research to encourage examination of and reflection on pedagogical choices within secondary school classrooms, so that the ethos of student voice and choice in curriculum and assessment creates more inclusive classrooms.
11:30 AM - 12:00 PM FACED Leadership
In traditional educational paradigms, young students are delivered both implicit and explicit messages labelling them as ‘leaders’, or as ‘non- leaders’. From the moment we provide them with a title, or pin a badge to their uniform, they are categorised in these polarised ways – and very often their future mindset and behaviours reflect this categorisation to a great extent. Designed to provide students with the skills, knowledge and confidence to embody a leadership mindset leveraging their own personal strengths and to take actions to lead in a range of contexts with confidence, the Be Challenged FACED Leadership Model guides students to the development of a strong understanding of their individual and collective strengths, as well as a knowledge of how to leverage these strengths to communicate with confidence, empathy and respect.

10:45 AM - 11:30 AM Wellbeing and Literacy – so what’s the link?
Wellbeing is a complex area with many factors at play. We are all aware of links between dyslexia and behaviour, for example. These are caused by feelings of frustration and exclusion when a learner finds they can’t read the things presented to them in class on a daily basis. However, a recent study throws an interesting light on specific aspects of literacy which have a direct link with feelings of wellbeing. Attendees will leave with a greater understanding of the link between wellbeing literacy, but also access to a complete range of screening tests designed to identify specific literacy challenges at the very earliest stages.

9:55 AM - 10:40 AM Overwhelm to Empowerment: Practical Strategies for Educators

In the modern world students are required to have access to devices to enhance their education. Yet in doing so, we are inadvertently arming them with a potentially lethal weapon. Unlike previous generations, today’s children are regularly exposed to cyber bullying, sexting, doxing, identity theft, deep fakes, radicalisation and sextortion, without the knowledge and support to deal with them. Jean Yates, Director of Education Cybernetic Shield, will provide an insight into some of the key issues experienced by young people online, and the impact these are having on their mental health. The session will outline what you need to know, how to deal with traumatic situations and how to access the support needed to arrest the devastating harm to our children and its tragic consequences.
