Student engagement has been recognised as being key to students' academic success. A significant amount of research confirms that student engagement is a multi-level concept that means different things to different people. Meanwhile, student disengagement continues to be a factor in schools.
I’ll present the journey of Woongoolba State School from the Principal’s point of view, explore the research behind the strategy and encourage listeners to be challenged to consider how to better align student engagement to pedagogical and curriculum reform in order to create high-performing schools.

Biography
David has over 25 years of experience as a teacher, deputy principal and principal. Due to his work in student support, leadership and engagement, his schools have been recognized by ACARA for having substantially above average gains in 2017 and 2018, State Schools Queensland (Showcase Regional Commendation 2018, Regional Awards: 2012, 2013), Showcase State Finalist (2013), Life Education Queensland (Children's Day School Award 2012) and Kids Matter Australia. David is also working on research for the Doctor of Education at Griffith University in student engagement and has recently spoken at the National Future Schools Conference in Melbourne, has presented his research at the 2019 ATEA Conference at the University of the Sunshine Coast in July and presented at the ACSA Curriculum Conference in Melbourne this September.
