Using our combined experience as educators and booksellers Kasia and Fiona will explore why diversity is important, explain what it means and how we can achieve inclusion on our library shelves. This will be a practical, title-based presentation which will combine useful and inspiring examples to help with choosing diverse books students will read.

Biography

Kasia Janczewski is the Co-manager and Visual Merchandiser for Where the Wild Things Are. She has worked for both Avid Reader and Where the Wild Things Are for over 8 years. She specialises in picture books and storytelling, has co-facilitated weekly story times, and special holiday story time events. Kasia also runs Avid Reader’s Her Voice bookclub. She has trained and worked as an art, history, and design teacher in secondary schools, and practiced as an artist. Kasia is the mother of twin 6 year-olds that help her test out, enjoy, and recommend many wonderful books!

Biography

Fiona Stager co-owns the award-winning independent bookshop Avid Reader and the dedicated children’s and young adult bookshop Where the Wild Things Are. She is a former President of the Australian Booksellers Association and was award the Johnno by the Queensland Writers Centre for services to the local writing community. Fiona is a regular reviewer, interviewer and speaker at festivals, author events and schools.
