Exploring how the gut microbiome holds the super powers every learner needs. The burgeoning research that has evolved over the last five to seven years into the gut microbiome is extremely exciting and offers wonderful insight for educators in how to best support their learners. The research highlights the ever important role of the gut microbiome within learning and its key function of supporting cognitive skills, flexibility, and adaptability. The key link between the gut microbiome and mental health is also of great importance for all educators to understand. A child without a diverse and balanced gut microbiome is like a superhero without a cape and super power!! With Anxiety rates skyrocketing in schools an understanding of the vital role the gut microbiome plays in anxiety and how this can be addressed and improved needs to be at the forefront of educators minds. This session will review the current literature, provide a discussion on the inner workings of the gut microbiome and the superpowers that the gut microbiome has for all learners. And finally, a personal story from the presenter as to how her own son, who was non verbal, anxious, and had a terrifying ASD diagnosis and prognosis, found his voice, his strength and how his life was turned around with finding out that his gut was out of balance and he needed to find his inner gut super powers so he could return to being a superhero once again. I will provide educators with tools on how to include this fascinating and ground breaking knowledge into everyday practice in the classroom. Where to turn to find answers to support parents in understanding their child's microbiome and if in fact it's imbalance is impacting their learning goals and resources to make exploring and understanding the gut microbiome fun and interactive.
